Where Passion Meets Process: My Creative Journey
Growing up in my hometown of Vancouver, WA, my main creative outlets were theater and band-- I remember staying late nights at school for all sorts of rehearsals. I couldn't get enough of the energy of creation and collaboration. This is when I really fell in love with the power and beauty of storytelling. I loved the emotional surges, the tactful expository pacing, the unsettling dissonance that exists in your bones until that oh so satisfying ultimate resolve. I loved finding unique ways to tell stories.
Attending college at the University of Washington introduced me to the world of improv when a friend suggested I audition for The Collective, UW's best and only improv troupe. Here, my wild ideas and wacky characters found a welcoming home, and my spirit of creative exploration thrived. In other words- I got to be weird with weird people...and I liked it.
But college was more than just improv and theater; it was a catalyst for connecting my passion for performance with a newfound understanding of what it meant to be a black woman in this world.
This exciting intersection led me to double major in Drama and Sociology, revealing to me how my creative expression could be used for more than just laughs and entertainment. I could use my voice for a purpose-- to advocate for a more just and vibrant world.
This spirit fueled my next adventure: a solo backpacking trip across the globe for six months. As a recipient of the Bonderman Fellowship, I explored Japan, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, South Africa, and Argentina. It was humbling and transformative – shattering any preconceived notions I had about the world.
Returning back home, I dove headfirst into corporate storytelling as a professional actress, working with companies like Microsoft, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Alongside corporate acting gigs, I immersed myself in the local Seattle theater community and was even nominated for a Gregory Award for best supporting actress in a play.
The desire to expand my skillset, coupled with the arrival of the pandemic, pushed me towards a corporate career.
The next few years were all about growth. I soaked up everything I could about the corporate world, sharpening my skills and filling knowledge gaps through online courses. Proud YouTube University alumnus!
It was during this time that I discovered a love for creative problem solving and project management. Now, as a Creative Project Manager at a creative agency, I get to combine my storytelling passion with my project management skills.
Looking ahead, I dream of becoming a freelance producer, diving even deeper into the world of storytelling and using my skills to make a positive impact.
Love my story? I'll bet you'll love my projects too!
